Surrounded by her children, Karima, 30, smokes heroin and opium in her one-room home in the neighborhood of Shahre Kohneh, roughly translated as "Broken City," Kabul, Afghanistan, Monday, Apr. 6, 2009. Karima is addicted to heroin, opium and hashish, and an outreach team from the Nejat Center, a community-based drug treatment program funded by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, has been trying to convince her to quit. A United Nations survey begun this month is widely expected to show that at least one in 12 Afghans abuses drugs -- double the number in the last survey four years ago.
