Shamsia Husseini, 17, attends her Dari class at Mirwais School for Girls in Kandahar, Afghanistan, Monday morning, April 20, 2009. On Nov. 12, 2008, men on motorcycles threw or sprayed acid on 11 students, including Husseini, and four teachers as they walked to school that morning. Husseini had to seek treatment abroad for her injuries. She is the only one of those attacked who has returned to school. Girls' enrollment at public schools has fallen throughout Kandahar because of decreasing security, but is increasing at literacy programs.
