Young protesters take a police shield emblazoned with the word Katil--"killer" in English--on top of the Monument to the Republic in Taksim Square, Istanbul, Turkey, June 1, 2013. The monument depicts Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and was inaugurated in 1928, five years after the republic was founded. What started as a peaceful sit-in to save a small park near Taksim Square from being turned into a shopping mall has turned into large-scale anti-government demonstrations in cities across Turkey.
